New changes has recently made to the way the city of Birmingham handles cases of domestic violence and there are great hopes that this fresh approach will reduce such instances in the city.

There has been a ‘multi-agency’ approach present within the city for many years now, and it had worked to some extent, yet the governmental forces within Birmingham have decided that something else needs to be done in order to effectively combat domestic violence.

Moving away from this ‘multi-agency’ approach, the council have decided to work in a ‘partnership’ format, with several choice partners within the voluntary, commercial and legal statutory sectors, including divorce lawyers and practitioners.

Any large community can be affected by domestic violence and the citizens of Birmingham is no different. Ranging from verbal abuse through to physical and sexual torment, no matter how stable a facade they show to the outside world domestic abuse can occur within any family. With no valid excuse for domestic violence, anyone who is suffering in silence should seek help immediately.

There are a lot of options available to these victims, with potential avenues of refuge in neighbours and relatives to lawyers and the police force. If you feel that either you or a loved one are in any danger, immediate or otherwise, then you should contact the police as soon as possible.

Legislative changes that occurred in the year 2000 and it caused a new pro-active approach in the dealings with cases of domestic violence. The Birmingham City Council website tells its citizens that A Corporate Domestic Violence Policy for the City Council has been developed and approved in December 2000.

This fresh approach concentrates on specialising the correct response to domestic violence instances by the new ‘partnerships’ that have been created with certain institutions and support agencies. Seeing as every case of domestic violence is specific within itself, with its own intricate details, then it would appear that each case requires its own particular handling methods.

A uniform approach is no longer seen as the correct way in which to approach cases of domestic violence in Birmingham, and the council are working harder than ever to combat such unpleasant, often horrific occurrences.

It is perhaps too early to assess whether the new legislative changes in Birmingham are having any positive and lasting effects in the battle against domestic violence, yet with the government researching and reviewing such cases, one can hope that a new report will appear at some point soon to decide whether this approach should be adopted by other cities around the country.
