New changes has recently made to the way the city of Birmingham handles cases of domestic violence and there are great hopes that this fresh approach will reduce such instances in the city.

There has been a ‘multi-agency’ approach present within the city for many years now, and it had worked to some extent, yet the governmental forces within Birmingham have decided that something else needs to be done in order to effectively combat domestic violence.

Departing from this ‘multi-agency’ approach, the council have decided to work within a ‘partnership’ format, with certain partners within the voluntary, commercial and legal statutory sectors, with the notable inclusion of divorce lawyers and practitioners.

Birmingham is a city whose citizens, like any other members of a large community can be affected by domestic violence. This can range from verbal abuse through to physical and sexual torment and it can occur within any family, no matter how stable a facade they show to the outside world; there is no excuse for domestic violence and anyone who is suffering should seek help immediately.

There are plenty of options available, from the refuge of relatives and neighbours to lawyers and the police. If you or a loved one are in any potential danger then you must contact the police at the first available moment.

The legislative changes occurred at the turn of the century and it meant for a new pro-active approach to dealing with the issue of domestic violence. As the Birmingham City Council website states, “A Corporate Domestic Violence Policy for the City Council was developed and this was approved in December 2000. This policy was produced by a corporate working group and had been through an extensive consultation exercise both within the City Council and with key partners and agencies in the voluntary, commercial and other statutory sectors.”

A corporate working group produced this policy, and it has been through an extensive consultation exercise both within the City Council and with specific partners and agencies in the voluntary, commercial and other statutory sectors. This fresh approach concentrates heavily on learning and creating the best response to domestic violence cases by the recent ‘partnerships’ that have been developed with specific institutions and support agencies. As every instance of domestic violence is individual in its own origins and causes, then it has been decided that each case will require its own particular handling methods.

It has also been decided that the uniform approach that has been utilised in the past is no longer seen as the best way in which to approach cases of domestic violence in Birmingham; now the council seem to be working harder than ever to combat such unpleasant, often horrific instances of abuse.

It is perhaps too early to assess whether the new legislative changes in Birmingham are having any positive and lasting effects in the battle against domestic violence, yet with the government researching and reviewing such cases, one can hope that a new report will appear at some point soon to decide whether this approach should be adopted by other cities around the country.
