Heparin injury should not be taken lightly. such an incident, which is generally caused by misuse or contamination of the heparin drug, has claimed the quality of life and even the lives of many people. This medication, which is widely used to prevent blood clotting, is actually the root cause of many incidents of allergic reactions, infections and even fatalities in patients.

Well, if you are an ordinary American like the rest of us, you wont have much idea about heparin or its nasty effects. But just recently, famous Hollywood actor Dennis Quaid and his wife, Kimberly Buffington, got the fright of their lives when they learned that their infant twins were suffering from heparin overdose. Apparently, the babies were given doses of heparin that were 1,000 times more than the required amount. It all happened at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center located in LA and the incident quickly hit the headlines. Fortunately, the twins survived.

Still, there are other victims of heparin injury who are not as lucky. The usual Blunders on the administration of heparin can happen in the labeling. Several cases of mislabeling and misuse have been recorded ever since the drug was introduced back in the 1930s. And today, health institutions are also grappling with the problem of contaminated heparin.

Allergic reactions as well as other types of adverse effects from contamination of heparin, which is administered through injections, can be fatal to patients, particularly the elderly and children. A little over 12 months ago, two prominent cases of contaminated heparin were reported. The first one was due to the use of a syringe that was tainted with a perilous bacterium called Serratia marcescens. The second case, which claimed over 80 lives in the U.S., was due to a Chinese heparin producer who used an inexpensive variety of one of the major components of the drug.

It is without a doubt that heparin can bee an effective anti-coagulant. Many people have already been saved by this medication. However, the sheer number of individuals who suffer from heparin injury cant be downplayed. It must be noted, though, that the issue here is not heparin itself, but its misuse and contamination.
