Slip and fall accidents happen frequently in the home but there are things that can be done to help prevent them. Approximately half the current number of accidents that occur within the home in the USA are falls. Our homes are somewhere we feel safe and so we do not always take note of all the dangers around us.

Accidents can happen when you are least expecting them and they can occur within any room in a house. The thing to do is to take some simple steps to make your home as accident proof as possible. It is probably not possible to prevent them completely but you can certainly lessen the chance of them happening.

A good example of a room where an accident can happen easily is the kitchen. Many kitchens have tiled floors and while these look great when all polished up and shiny they can also be a cause of slips. If you or anyone in your family regularly walks around in just socks then you are putting yourself at risk of slipping over.

Spills that are not cleaned up immediately are another reason that people slip over in the kitchen. Spills needs to be cleaned immediately to lessen any chance of them being a cause of injury. Once the area of the spill has been washed you need to ensure it has had time to dry before walking on it.

Stairs are another area where people can be injured. Most people tend to run up and down stairs to fetch things without really looking where they are going. Potential hazards are things like kids toys being left out or loose carpets where you could catch you r feet on the corner. Make sure that your stair carpets are in good repair and that your children tidy away their toys as they go.

Bedrooms are a minefield of slip and fall opportunities. There are often cables across the floor from electrical goods such as TV’s or games consoles and these can be easily tripped over. Items are often stored on the top shelves of closets and rather than get a small ladder to reach then people will stretch. This can lead to people losing their balance and falling over.

Loose cables should be kept tidy to prevent the risk of someone tripping over them. Items kept on high shelves should be got down with care, for example by using a chair to stand rather than reaching above your head. Toys and loose items should be put in boxes so they are not left on the floor.

Use of bath oils can lead to very slippery surfaces in the bathroom. This increases the danger of someone slipping over whilst in the bath or shower. Always make sure any bath oil residue is cleaned up thoroughly after use. Check bathmats to ensure they do not have frayed edges or loose thread that could be tripped over. Water on the floor should be wiped up immediately.

Slip and fall accidents are easy to prevent. All it takes is a few precautions and a good deal of common sense. Make sure things are tidied away when not in use, that spillages are cleaned up and that repairs are carried out in a timely fashion.
