It sounds like a myth. However, for those willing to consider their options and make the necessary effort, affordable auto insurance for student drivers can become a reality. If the student is fortunate enough to have been designated a ‘good student,’ there will be an auto insurer around willing to offer a reduced premium.

How do you get to be labeled a ‘good student’? Good grades, a high GPA or being on the honor roll are criteria for showing you deserve affordable auto insurance. As a ‘good student’ you are a desirable client for an auto insurer because you are expected to be a good risk. This means that the insurer is willing to offer a reduction in the cost of your insurance premium.

But it is not just the GPA that can used to establish that this is a ‘good student.’ Some insurers will be impressed and respond favorably if the student in question has enrolled in a fulltime university or community college program. It is certainly worth making the case to the insurer.

Do not just cave in and pay an exorbitant insurance premium. Search for ways to make a case to have the premium reduced. Sometimes, we become overwhelmed by the minutiae of establishing a legitimate claim, but when you get that lower premium, it will be money well spent.

Maybe proving ‘good student’ status is not possible in this particular instance. Then look at other ways to reduce the premium such as buying the student an inexpensive car and restricting the insurance cover to the essentials by raising the deductibles or eliminating expendable cover such as collision and comprehensive altogether. Although raising the deductible would still be a possibility, elimination of collision and comprehensive would not be sound advice if your student was driving an expensive car, for example a Lexus SUV.

There are many reasons to go for good grades, and affordable student auto insurance is just one more. Also, as long as you have the liability insurance the state requires, you can economize in other areas sensibly by making adjustments relative to the type of vehicle and, it must be said, the type of student involved.
