What Is The Law Society?
The solicitors of UK joined together to form a society of their own, can be regarded as their trade union, having the idea behind to give their profession legal platform to provide services to their clients on the basis of social justice. They train and qualify undergrad, graduate lawyers.
In the mid of the last millennium, the legal profession was divided into two general categories of barristers and attorneys. Barristers were dealing with the real estate problems; on the other hand, attorneys were involved in resolving the lawsuits. Later, they came under a single name of solicitors. There were good solicitors and bad too, which were creating bad name for the whole of the profession.
London Law Institution was formed with the consent of the solicitors in’23, in order to give them a podium to put forward their services, and to establish standards for good performance.
Initially known, the Society of Attorneys, Solicitors, Proctors was formed on June 2,’25, and was comprised of professionals working at the court of Law and Equity of the United Kingdom. Later the society declared its official name as The Law Society.
Initial agenda of the society was to deracinate fraudulent practitioners. They asked for the right to access the accounts of each, and every practitioner in order to find the deceptive ones. They issue annual certificate of clearance to the ones having a clear record, which is valid up to one year. They have also formed a Consumer Complaint Service to receive complaints about solicitors.
In order to improve the services of the profession several lectures have been delivered, as education to concern people through proper channel is the backbone to improve anything. They also formed College of Law for their own good, but later it was compulsory for every clerk to have a course of one year. The union, from its formation has a strong point of view, which have been propelled in the right direction, therefore has positive strong ties with the Government. They helped the Government to form legal policy, and Law Reform, not only this, the Government always welcomed their gesture of bringing down the fraudulent of their own profession. Now they have moved forward by monitoring, maintaining, and validating the control of the undergrads, grads, and training contracts ensuring the progress of the profession.
The services offered by the society have increased its radius since it was formed. The society owns a library, dining club to add to its assets. A Gazette was first published in’03, increased its ties with different parties giving it a new launching pad. Additional services like advice to members on nominal fee, licensed practice and other services were made available by’59.
Research Unit was also included in the portfolio of the society to publish literature about the profession; it was formed in’88.
